Blessings sweet peas! Radical radishes! Homey tomatoes!
Since the growing season has extended and NYC’s developments are still booming, we are hard at work and play on many important projects for community garden creation and preservation.
Please note that the More Gardens! Fund is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and your donations are tax-deductible according to the law. Your donation will help with these most needed green projects:
“21 Harlem United Gardens (HUG) under attack - 50 endangered city-wide” We are stationed at the Nuevo Esperanza Community Garden. This encampment is the frontline of 21 endangered HUG community gardens.
We are still working on defending five other community gardens in the South Bronx with the South Bronx United Gardens.
There is also the rally to preserve the Children’s Magical Garden in the Lower East side.
“Adventure Summer Camp for kids in the South Bronx” We are working towards our third year of the Animal Adventure Summer Camp. AASC is a free day camp for youth ages 8-12 in the Melrose neighborhood of the South Bronx. Youth play and volunteer in Bronx community gardens and begin to learn about relationships within their communities, the environment, and with themselves. Our adventures last year took us on a composting adventure at the New York Botanical Garden, canoeing on the Bronx River, identifying butterflies at the Bronx Zoo, on a train adventure to an organic farm in Wassaic, and so much more. In Wassaic, kids harvested their own potatoes to make French fries and picked their own tomatoes for a salad. For most of the campers this was their first time out of the city and in a rural farm setting. “So when are we going to Wassaic again?… That was so cool! Did you see that deer? Whoa!" are some of the many refrains we hear from the camp kids each time we talk on the phone or see them on one of our Fall Adventures.
“Building Coalitions!“ We are working towards a fourth city-wide community garden forum with community garden coalitions and other greening groups. We are working on a large Lower East Side garden parade in celebration of the diversity of the preserved gardens and those that need to be made permanent. We need your support to keep these great projects running.
